At Home Workouts

Writer's picture: Syd JoSyd Jo

In 2020 when all the gyms shut down and there was absolutely nothing to do, a lot of people turned to home workouts. It felt like starting a fitness journey from scratch, gym-less and burning off years of booze and delivery services that was inaccessible to me within the structure of this new world. At home fitness may change your life and help you find the motivation deep inside of yourself. Just changing out of those pajamas into workout clothes and doing something just as intense as you would do in the gym with an audience, with no one but yourself to hold you accountable.

This will change your body in more specific ways, building strength from the inside out and prove to you that there are no excuses, you don't need a gym, you don't even need workout shoes. Just a little bit of motivation.

I live in an apartment..

It's New York so probably.. Don't worry there's a plethora of apartment friendly workouts. I'd highly recommend a run outside and then a nice youtube workout to get a top tier workout but when it's too damn cold- an apartment friendly HIIT workout will hit.

Beginners vs Advanced

Beginners: Try CHLOE TING. She's got plans built out for you - warms ups, day splits, everything is so accessible! Here are all her FREE workout programs.

If you're very fit already and looking for more intense workouts - Sami Clarke and Pamela Reif are my absolute favorites. Pam's workouts labeled "intense" are the best, but keep in mind, the difference between most beginner and advanced workouts are the breaks in between. So if I find a good workout and I want to turn it up a notch, I just double click and skip that 10 second rest break.

Warm Up:

Pick a focus, I split my week up by legs / abs / back / arms. Type in what you want, Thighs, Booty not legs, Abs, Obliques, Arms, if you want it, you can find it..

Fitness Goals?

Lose Weight:

You need HIIT or a run before any kind of floor workout, you're looking to burn calories - then go into toning.

Spot Treatment/Toning/Muscle Growth:

Obviously there's no way to spot treat weight, but if you have specific insecurities, you have a free personal trainer at your fingertips.

Arms: Invest in a pair of weights, even 5 pounds is enough to really see some change. Sami Clarke has the greatest weighted arm workouts as does Kelly Gale. Chloe Ting has a lovely Lean Arms workout program, that can be found here!

Legs: Resistance bands, resistance bands, resistance bands. Quality ones, none of that plastic shit, they can be found super cheap on Amazon so invest in yourself. You'll find it very difficult to build muscle with just body weight exercises. Youtube "resistance band booty workouts" and Chloe Ting has a program for this as well.

Abs: I am of the belief that you should throw in an ab workout with every workout you do, just an ab burnout at the end will do so much for you. I know you don't want to hear it but the only way you're going to see those babies is diet.. or pilates. The greatest thing you can do for your abs is the stomach vacuum as well as ALWAYS flexing your core during every workout you do, when you're running, when you're walking, when you're sitting in your work chair for 8 hours at a time. I love "hourglass" titled workouts as well.

My greatest fitness tip is Classpass or group workout classes. Solidcore, Barrys, Orange Theory, Y7 Hot Hip Hot Yoga, Rumble Boxing, SoulCycle - anything that gets you excited to workout or that you love doing is the only way you're going to change your lifestyle. Get a friend to do classes with you! But also don't be afraid to go alone, most people are there alone.

Another tip: because this is all YT centric- connect it to your TV and use another screen for music or a TV show. There will be commercial that feel so disruptive, music that feels repetitive, or an instructor who may get on your nerves- get out of your head, put on a playlist of music you actually like, Gilmore Girls, something to distract you and allow you to push- it goes by much quicker.
