Le Big Matt Burger and Emmy Squared Pizza

"Emmy Squared Pizza" is one of the places I respond with when people ask what I think the best pizza in New York City is. It's Detroit style and they take toppings to the next level, completely unafraid to throw on something atypical. I love the white sauce pizzas- the Angel Pie is ricotta, mushroom, and truffle and it just hits the spot every time.

Locations in: East Village, Williamsburg, Upper East Side.

This time around we tried the Big Ang and it was delicious. It's a vodka sauce pizza with meatballs, burrata and banana peppers. I wish they would've spread the meatballs out more so that you'd get one with every bite but it was still a wonderful experience for my tastebuds. The meatball is so beautifully made it really melts in the mouth, as well as packing a kick ass flavor profile. I was mildly concerned with the banana peppers but it added a perfect crunch to the pizza and it paired nicely with the burrata for a necessary kick.

The Le Big Matt Burger was a little disappointing. If it has "Big" in the name and costs nearly $30 I was expecting something spectacular. It is a below average sized burger. Okay, we can push past it, maybe it's got some big flavor..

When you bite into the burger, you're left searching for a flavor other than the pickle and burger. When you get to the burger, past the saucy texture, it truly is delicious. It's cooked to perfection and seasoned well- but you know immediately why you'd need two patties, they're so thin. I mentioned "saucy texture" because we couldn't for the life of us taste any flavor in any sauce (any of the sauces?) (were there multiple?) . The menu said "Sammy Sauce" but as far as we could tell it was maybe mayo? I'm unsure why it was yellow.

The pretzel bun wasn't doing the burger any favors either. As in it was doing nothing. If you closed your eyes it would've appeared to be any other thicker burger bun- it felt to be more of a gimmick, to set it apart in peoples heads if anything. It served no purpose taste wise. The pickles were there too. You could definitely taste the pickles.

All in all the burger boasts "greens" (maybe a couple spinach leaves or something,) Sammy sauce, American cheese, pickles and the patty on a pretzel bun so what makes this burger so enticing to local media? I'll never know. Adding Ketchup even would've been an easily distinguishable addition on a burger that would've brought us back to what we know, which is what a good burger tastes like. The meat was phenomenal, I just find the mix of what they've paired with it to leave you wanting more.

The waffle fries were great, what waffle fries aren't? My 2nd disappointment was most certainly the "ranch". How dare they masquerade this green mint sauce as ranch, it contains not a single trait that qualifies ranch as ranch. Which I would define as a white, creamy sauce with a base of usually buttermilk (the good kind), potentially mayo or sour cream (the less good kind) with hints of fresh garlic and herb. The waiter had even boasted to us how great their ranch was. Which only leads me to believe this man has never had ranch in his life.

Anyway, come for the pizza. The ambiance is great, it's a good sit down place, dress it up, dress it down, it's very versatile and very delicious.
