We are always on the hunt for some good Thai food wherever we may be and to summarize the following and assure you that you don't really need to read on- go to Thep Thai if you're on the UES. BUT: a word of caution: go at an off time, because you'll never get in after 6. THEY DON'T TAKE RESERVATIONS.
That is most certainly where I have to fault them. They do offer a wait list via Yelp and if you happen to pull it up and it allows you to put your name on it, then lucky you. The app didn't work for us for whatever glitch, but we rolled in at 4 pm on a Sunday to the best table in the house.

Decked out in purple flowers and faux lemons, when we were immediately sat down, we had a very low bar for the food because unless it was truly terrible, it would've been hard to disappoint us. An ode to the ambiance.
We started off with the Thep Platter, their $19 app platter which was a combination of golden sachets, spring rolls, chive pancakes, fried chicken dumplings, and fried shrimp dumplings. I wish there was more than one of each but we HAD to try as many as we could so as to make an informed decision the next time we go, (as we will definitely be going again).
While I enjoy a sampling, the chive pancakes weren't good, and the rest were fine, but other appetizers would've been better. The Spring Roll was extra crispy and thin, so whatever was stuffed inside didn't come through very strong. As far as dumplings go, they were not your average dumplings, they did have an extra level of flavor baked into the casing and the shrimp was very delectable so if you love dumplings, I'd order a whole appetizer of just your favorite, instead of the platter option where you're only left with a little sampling.

We had the pork buns which are a MUST. To further drive home this point, we did order a second round..These are what pork buns should be, while $12 for 2 is to be expected, they don't skimp on the pork belly, it's delicious and cooked to perfection with the right condiments to compliment the bao and pork.
Overall, I would recommend ordering the pork bun paired with a different appetizer of your choice, instead of the $19 platter, you'll get more bang for your buck.

The entrees were truly delicious. I've been sadly disappointed by Pad See Ew at sit down restaurants lately (for whatever reason, delivery never fails me,) but this was great, sweet and flavorful with mass amounts of chicken. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the portion was the right size. The carrots didn't do anything for me but they didn't negatively affect me either. Get your veggies.
My partner got the Panang Curry Long Island Duck and that was a whole different ball game but the same league. The curry was coconutty, creamy and rather addicting. You could eat it by itself with a spoon. Which we did.
They could've had slightly more rice and sauce so you could evenly portion out the duck but being as this seems to be a trend at Thai restaurants, perhaps that only emphasized the quality of the duck and proved that it doesn't need to be overpowered by any additional accent.
All in all, this is the best Thai we've had on the Upper East Side- and don't you dare go to Bua.
