Pomme Frites, The Greatest Fries on Earth? Or The Greatest Drunk Food of All Time?

Win-win either way. Back in 2015 the East Village lost this little gem in a fire but fret not, it's been back in the West Village and it's as good as ever. Look at these fries! The delicate color, the salt, the shape. I always speak to the importance of girth in my fries and along with the just-right crisp factor, they have mastered this recipe so beautifully they deserve an award. This crisp is all due to their special double frying method, the first to cook, the second to ensure that delectable golden brown color throughout. I'm taking careful measures to ensure I never say French fries as the important distinction here is they're Belgium fries! Hence the name.

Evidently Europeans use a spectrum of sauces for their fries that stretches much farther than ketchup and I love that Pomme Frites is bringing those options to us. Right now they're at about 36 ranging from Truffle variations, Sweet Mango Chutney, Spicy Mayo, Wasabi, to Pomegranate Teriyaki, Horseradish Chipotle Ketchup, Bordeaux Wine, Figs & Sage, Garlic Aoili and more.

We tried Mediterranean Delight which had an array of Mediterranean flavors, none of which I could identify and none of which I was particularly fond of. Parmesan Peppercorn was just a lot of pepper. The Truffle Mayo was fantastic though. I don't fault them for my own life choices, and ketchup is always free- so no one lost here.

Mastery is a theme throughout this spot with subtle touches such as serving you in a huge cone and then placing holes in the tables to perfectly set that cone into. They do serve wine but I don't recommend going with the intent of getting a spot as it is a small place. We witnessed a first date.. as they shared our table. It was horribly uncomfortable. Be a pro, take your cone to go- Washington Square Park is there for a reason!

It's regular crowd in evenings is drunk people and I completely understand why. It's proximity to bars, to Artichoke Pizza, it's all perfectly located to grab that market but this place should not be overlooked as just a drunk eats spot. If you enjoy really good fries and better sauces, this would be a great pit stop to make when you're in the area. A perfect addition to any itinerary.

Left to right: Parmesan Peppercorn, Truffle Mayo, Mediterranean Delight.
